Afula is a city in the Northern District of Israel located in the heart of the Jezreel Valley, between the cities of Hadera and Tiberias. Afula is located in the place where the ancient biblical settlement of Afal, mentioned in the Book of Kings, was located. In 1909, Yehoshua Hankin completed his first major purchase in the Jezreel Valley when he purchased about 10,000 dunams of land from the Sursuk family in Beirut, who owned the land.
Modern Afula was founded in 1925 by a Zionist settlement company called the American Zion Community near an ancient site called Tel Afula. The tiny Arab village of Al-Fula, which was located nearby and was originally founded by Saladin, was later dismantled. At that time, the "Valley Railway" railway line, founded by the Turkish Empire in 1905, passed through the settlement, which ceased operation during the War of Independence and resumed operation in the 21st century.
About 5 kilometers northwest of Afula, two neighborhoods were established on Israel Lands Administration lands: Afula Elite, which was established in 1950, and opposite it, the Givat HaMohra neighborhood located up the Givat HaMohra mountain. For many years, an agricultural area about 4 kilometers long separated the two parts of Afula.
